This course focuses on the history of the French Quarter as both the original city of New Orleans and its shifting role as the city’s flagship neighborhood. While the French, Spanish, and early American periods are covered, the emphasis of the course is on 20th century history. Topics include, but are not limited to: architecture, historical preservation, colorful characters, the rise of tourism, literature and arts, drinking culture, crime and vice, and LGBT+ history. The last class meeting is a walking tour of the French Quarter.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a Loyola University New Orleans Certificate of Completion and 2.1 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Scholarship Opportunity
The Office of Professional and Continuing Studies (PACS) received a grant from the New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund supporting professional development for aspiring and seasoned tour guides of New Orleans. PACS is offering 5 scholarships to eligible applicants to receive full tuition for the French Quarter History course starting October 25 - December 6, 2023.
The mission of the New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund is to support cultural industries and culture bearers of the City of New Orleans through partnerships, grants, and programs to advance sustainable tourism.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Aspiring or Licensed Tour Guide of New Orleans
- Demonstrates financial need
- Must attend all sessions and ensure sign-in is completed
- Must complete the mid-point and final surveys emailed from pacs@loyno.edu
Deadline to apply is Friday, October 13, 2023 at 11:59PM. Applications will be reviewed and granted on a rolling basis, so we encourage you to apply as soon as possible. Applications will either close once all awards have been accepted or by October 13, 2023, whichever comes first.
